Vladimir Putin, too broke to put on a shirt and buy a ticket to St. Petersburg There’s a fallacy that says that if you make the Russians happy, they’ll work with you . Nothing could be further from the truth. Russia is only going to help us deal with rogue nations if it is in their interest to do so. Anything else, and they’re going to shrug their shoulders and pull out their pockets to show us how broke and helpless they are. The wisdom of abandoning missile defense was wrapped up in the idea that Russia is no threat to anyone.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – The Kremlin’s chief political strategist warned in an article published on Monday that Russia risked collapsing into chaos if officials tried to tinker with the political system by flirting with liberal reforms. Kremlin Deputy Chief of Staff Vladislav Surkov said it was clear Russia was falling behind in many areas of economic development and that the country could not simply continue being a “resource power.” But in answer to calls from opponents for democratic reforms to liberalize the political system built under former President Vladimir Putin, Surkov warned that the resulting instability could rip Russia apart.

With portfolio investments to EM countries also rising, policymakers need to figure out how to avoid losing international competitiveness while also containing asset inflation and the emergence of asset bubbles.

Tracing the policy movements of Presidential power-handler Vladislav Surkov is rather like witnessing a three-point turn in a dark alley - as a piece in the Power Vertical points out today. Whilst transparency is the last thing once can expect from the Kremlin’s shadowy ideologue, his moves of late are dizzying analysts. Brian Whitmore identifies some of Surkov’s recent twists - from the motives for his alleged involvement in the Duma walkout - to the matter of his oscillating stance on liberalizing political structures to aid economic development.

Exclusive Banksy Exhibition, UK – Original Stencil Art Sold- Sneak Look October 2009… I was a lucky lad on Monday (big shout to James W for sorting it!) and got the chance to go to a private Banksy exhibition and sale in London at a members-only club deeeeeeeep in the ground. We weren’t allowed to take photos so apologies for the poor quality of the pics, but it ain’t easy to be subtle with a bloody huge camera phone so I did my best to shoot what I could! It was great to see the art in the flesh instead of just prints, and there were a couple there I’ve never seen pics of before so that was pretty cool.
